Princeton Drops Two To Duke
March 04, 2017 | Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. – The Princeton Tigers dropped two games against the Duke Blue Devils, 9-2 and 7-1, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Saturday.
Duke 9, Princeton 2
Jesper Horsted and Nick Hernandez each had two hits for the Tigers while Zack Belski hit Princeton's first home run of the season. Ryan Smith struck out five in four relief innings.
Freshman David Harding's first collegiate hit was a memorable one as he knocked in Hernandez to give Princeton a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Another freshman Conor Nolan also snagged his first hit one batter later. Later in the frame, the Tigers had the bases loaded with two out, but couldn't add on.
Belski led off the Tigers' half of the third inning with a booming home run to right field, but Duke got on the scoreboard with a crooked number in its half of the third. The Blue Devils had seven straight hitters reach base and registered five runs on four walks and a wild pitch.
Ramzi Haddad picked up his first collegiate knock with a lead-off double in the sixth inning. Later in the inning, Back-to-back RBI hits gave Duke a 7-2 advantage. A wild pitch tacked on another run in the sixth for Duke. A sac fly in the eighth completed the scoring.
Duke 7, Princeton 1
Harding continued his stellar day with two more hits out of the leadoff spot. Joseph Flynn, Haddad and Max West also had hits in the game. Ben Gross had a fantastic performance on the mound, allowing two hits and striking out eight in five innings.
Like the first game, the Tigers got on the scoreboard first as West singled through the right side to score Flynn with two out.
After a single and walk in the third, Gross got Duke's best hitter coming into the weekend, Griffin Conine, to fly out. Duke performed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position, but Gross helped turn a double play to escape the jam. The Princeton starter retired his final six hitters to get through the fifth stanza.
It took just two batters into the sixth inning for Duke to tie the game as Conine laced a run-scoring triple. Andrew Gnazzo would strike out the next two batters, but the Blue Devils' Max Miller tripled home Conine. Duke added three more runs to take a 5-1 advantage. Two more tallies for the Blue Devils in the seventh inning finished the scoring.
Princeton will look for its first win of the season in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. James Proctor will make his collegiate debut on the mound for the Tigers.
