Princeton Tripped Up By Duke, 6-1
March 05, 2017 | Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke Blue Devils posted a four-run third inning to take down the Princeton Tigers, 6-1, at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Sunday afternoon.
Zack Belski and Cody Phillips had two hits each for Princeton. Eli Kimbell made his collegiate debut in the eighth inning, throwing a scoreless frame.
An infield single put runners on first and second with one out in the first at-bat for the Tigers, but a strikeout and fly out ended the threat.
The bottom of Duke's order proved to be a difference maker as it started the four-run inning in the third. The eighth hitter, Kennie Taylor's, two-run double down the left field line put the Blue Devils in front, 2-1. Two hitters later, Griffin Conine singled home Taylor while a sacrifice fly added another tally for Duke.
Princeton looked to get back within two, but a runner was cut down at the plate to end the fourth stanza. James Proctor, the Tigers' starting pitcher, finished his outing by retiring nine of his last 10 batters. He had four strikeouts in six innings of work.
A wild pitch and walk gave Duke its fifth and sixth runs of the game in the seventh inning. Paul Tupper registered the Tigers' run on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Princeton will get back in action at UNC-Greensboro next Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
