Softball Team Splits Saturday For Season's First Win

The first win of the 2017 season for the Princeton softball team came Saturday as the Tigers beat Sam Houston State 9-5 after a 16-2, five inning loss to Wisconsin in the day's opener in Houston.
Against SHSUÂ (7-11), the Tigers (1-3) scored three times in the top of the second, with two coming in on singles by Haley Hineman and Megan Donahey. After the Bearkats answered with three in the bottom of that inning before Princeton went back up 5-3 in the top of the third on a Marissa Reynolds triple and an SHSU throwing error.
The Bearkats pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth before Princeton got that run back in the sixth on a Reynolds home run, Princeton's first of the season, and the Tigers added three more in the top of the seventh. Allison Harvey homered to bring in a pair before Reynolds added her third RBI of the day on a single to push Princeton's lead to 9-4. SHSU got one back in the bottom of the seventh before Claire Klausner (1-1) finished off the win. Tayler Atkinson (2-7) took the loss for SHSU.
Against Wisconsin, the Badgers (15-2) broke it open with an eight-run third inning to grow its lead to 10-0 before Princeton scored both its runs in the bottom half of that inning. Donahey had the third of three straight singles to open the inning and rive in a run, and Harvey followed with another single two batters later to bring home the second run. Harvey led the Tigers with a 2-for-3 game at the plate.
Kirsten Stevens (6-0) picked up the win for Wisconsin while Ashley LaGuardia (0-1) took the loss for the Tigers.
After the first two days of games, a pair of freshmen in Donahey and Harvey lead the Tigers with a combined .571 (12-21) average with Donahey starting her Tiger career 6 for 9 at the plate.
