Koelzer Signs With Riveters, Begins Practice Immediately
March 07, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
The New York Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League have signed Princeton's Kelsey Koelzer to a contract for the remainder of the season as the Riveters make a push for the Isobel Cup.
The top pick in the 2016 NWHL draft, Koelzer is the first player to be signed to a contract this late in the NWHL season.
"Being part of the NWHL was a priority for me because I want to take my development from four years at Princeton and utilize it playing with and against some of the best women's hockey players in the world," Koelzer said. "I am sad that my collegiate career has come to an end, but I was lucky to play alongside amazing players and coaches. I'm hoping to use that experience to contribute to the remainder of the Riveters' season in any way I can."
"After drafting her last year and closely following her outstanding senior season, we're ecstatic to have Kelsey begin her Riveters career today," said Riveters GM and coach Chad Wiseman. "She is a dynamic defender who will make us a better team."
A two-time Patty Kazmaier finalist, Koelzer is also a first-team All-American and has been named all-ECAC three consecutive season. The 2016 ECAC Best Defenseman of the Year, she was a finalist for the award again this season. The 2016 Ivy League Player of the Year, finished her collegiate career at Princeton last weekend as the Tigers reached the ECAC Hockey semifinals for the first time since 2005-06. Playing in 128 career games, Koelzer became just the third defender in Princeton history to reach 100 points, as she concludes her collegiate game with 39 goals and 61 assists. She had an incredible 203 career blocks and finished with a +46 on-ice rating. This season she ranks second nationally in points per game for a defender, and did so last year as well, with 31 points in 33 games.
"We think it's awesome Kelsey has the opportunity to continue her hockey career," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We are proud of her and her accomplishments. Even though she is a Riveter now, Kelsey is PWIH Forever."
The Riveters' regular season finale is Sunday, March 12 at 4 p.m. against Boston in Newark. The Riveters host a semifinal playoff game on Friday, March 17 at 7:30 p.m. The 2016-17 NWHL season concludes on Sunday, March 19, when the Isobel Cup Final is played at 6 p.m. at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell.
