Softball Team Sweeps First of Two Doubleheaders at Penn
April 15, 2017 | Softball
A doubleheader sweep for the Princeton softball team over Penn Saturday, 4-3 and 3-2, and one by Cornell at Columbia helped put Princeton three games up in the Ivy South standings with 10 to play.
Of course, the Tigers will be looking for more in Sunday's 2 p.m. twinbill back in Philadelphia on the Ivy League Digital Network, but Saturday's sweep already clinched Princeton's best finish in a four-game series since the Ivy went to divisions in 2007. The Tigers hadn't won more than one game in any of its four previous trips to Penn from 2009-15. The last time Princeton swept a doubleheader at Penn was in 2006.
Philadelphia-area native Alex Viscusi drove in three of Princeton's four runs in the opener, homering in the third and sending a two-run single down the line to give Princeton a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Marissa Reynolds and Kaylee Grant had one-out singles in that inning before Mikayla Blaska drove home Reynolds for the first run of the frame.
Penn struck back with a Sarah Cwertnia home run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 4-1, and a Corey Burrough RBI single brought home Katie Petroski, who was running for Jurie Joyner after a leadoff single. That cut the Tiger lead to 4-2, but Claire Klausner and Riley Wilkinson, who entered the circle with two out in the seventh, closed out the win. Alexis Sargent took the loss for Penn.
In game two, Princeton scored all three of its runs in the second inning. A double from Viscusi, an error that allowed Keeley Walsh to reach, two wild pitches and consecutive singles from Danielle Dockx, Megan Donahey and Blaska chased starter Courtney Cuzick from the game and added up to the three Tiger runs. Penn got one back when Molly Oretsky doubled home Leah Allen, who had reached on an error, and the Quakers pulled within 3-2 when two singles and an error pushed home another run.
After that, though, Erica Nori for Princeton and reliever Mason Spichiger for Penn traded zeroes, with Nori giving the ball to Wilkinson in the sixth as the sophomore locked down her second save of the day.
