Wasserman's Win Clinches Men's Tennis Team's First Ivy Victory
April 15, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Jimmy Wasserman's match was the last one on court Saturday as Princeton and Yale battled for the fourth team point to clinch the win, and Wasserman took the decisive third third set to get that last point and deliver the Tiger men's tennis team its first Ivy League win, 4-3 over Yale.
"After playing a solid doubles point, it was a gritty effort from the bottom half of the lineup that helped us secure a hard-fought win today," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "We needed to get over the hump as we haven't played our best of late. However, it's always nice to finish on the winning end of a close match. Yale has a talented team and their top three really played better than us today. It's a quick turnaround on the road, so we'll enjoy this very briefly while recovering mentally and physically in preparation for Brown tomorrow."
Princeton got the doubles point courtesy of wins from the nation's 31st-ranked pair of Alex Day and Luke Gamble at first and Wasserman and Payton Holden at second. Yale grabbed the momentum at the start of singles play, taking each of the first three matches to finish in straight sets. Princeton needed all three on court, and Jonathan Carcione delivered the first with a 7-5, 7-5 win at sixth. Luke Gamble then bounced back from losing the first set to win at fourth, and Wasserman, who won his first set bu tfell in the second, rebounded for the third-set win that clinched the match for the Tigers.
Princeton will continue into New England for Sunday's 1 p.m. match at Brown to wrap the weekend. The team's Twitter account, @PtonMensTennis, will have updates.
