Cornell Earns Weekend Split Against Princeton
April 30, 2017 | Baseball
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton Tigers wrapped up the 2017 season, dropping two games against the Cornell Big Red at Hoy Field on Sunday afternoon. Cornell won 5-1 in game one and 13-1 in game two.
Cornell 5, Princeton 1
Joseph Flynn, Jesper Horsted and Paul Tupper all had multi-hit games for the Tigers. Ben Gross struck out a season-high nine batters in the loss.
Continuing his great performance from Friday, Tupper opened up the second inning with a single, stole second and then came around to score on a single from Flynn. After a single from Max West, a wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out, but a foul out and fly out completed the frame.
Horsted led off the fifth inning with a double, but was left stranded. Cornell registered the equalizer when a fielding error allowed Ellis Bitar to score in the bottom of the sixth. The next hitter, Will Simoneit, launched a grand slam to left center that put the Big Red ahead, 5-1. Princeton went down in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory for Cornell.
Cornell 13, Princeton 1
Dale Wickham's RBI groundout in the first inning got the home team on the board. Bitar's two-run triple added to the Big Red's advantage in the fifth frame. Cornell put up three more runs in the sixth inning before six runs in the seventh and one more tally in the eighth.
Princeton's only run came on a fielding error in the eighth stanza. Four different Big Red had at least three hits, highlighted by Frankie Padulo's 4-for-4 performance. Cornell had 18 hits while its pitching staff allowed just one hit.
The Tigers' Class of 2017 finishes their careers with 57 wins. After going 7-32 in 2015, the group helped the Tigers host the 2016 Ivy League Championship at Clarke Field. After dropping the first game of the Championship Series, Princeton rallied to win games two and three, winning the ninth conference crown in program history.
