Princeton Suffers Loss to Monmouth, 8-4
April 05, 2017 | Baseball
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – A five-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Monmouth Hawks defeated the Princeton Tigers, 8-4, at Monmouth Baseball Field on Wednesday evening.
Jesper Horsted and Ramzi Haddad led the Tigers with two hits each. Princeton's pitchers combined for nine strikeouts. Eli Kimbell and Bryce Keller went the last 2 1/3 innings, not allowing a hit, striking out five. Max West threw out three runners trying to advance on the base paths.
The home team wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as back-to-back RBI singles with two out put the Hawks ahead, 2-0, in the first inning.
With one out in the second, Haddad had an infield single and moved to second base on a single from West. The two were left stranded in scoring position as a fly out ended the frame.
Monmouth added another run in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk. After having 10 straight hitters go down in order, Princeton put together a rally in the sixth frame.
David Harding opened the sixth with a walk while Horsted then singled to center. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Lee-Tyson smacked a hit to center field that scored Harding and put runners on the corners with no out. Monmouth's Ben Hoffman came into the game and escaped further damage with a strikeout and double play groundout.
The Hawks put the game away with a five-run frame in the bottom of the sixth inning. A RBI single followed by a bases-loaded walk and two wild pitches made the score 7-1. Clay Koniencki's run-scoring double down the left field line completed the scoring.
In the ninth stanza, Joseph Flynn's RBI single preceded Harding's run-producing double. Horsted's RBI groundout finished off the scoring for the Tigers.
Princeton continues Ivy League play this weekend as it travels on the road to take on Dartmouth on Saturday (Apr. 8) and Harvard on Sunday (Apr. 9). Each day will be a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.
