Season Recap: Princeton Reaches 20-Win Milestone, Advances to CWPA Championship Game
May 26, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
Here's a recap of the women's water polo season that finished with a trip to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship game.
Signature Wins:
Ashleigh Johnson did just about everything on Feb. 5, stopping 11 shots, stealing two passes, assisting on a goal….and of course, scoring her own goal as the Princeton defeated the No. 21 Wagner Seahawks, 14-7.
In front of a nationally televised audience on ESPNU, Ashleigh Johnson shined with 10 saves as the Tigers defeated the No. 19 Harvard Crimson, 7-6, at DeNunzio Pool on Feb. 25. Lindsey Kelleher had her seventh career hat trick including the game-winner. Eliza Britt contributed two tallies and a steal in the win.
A common occurrence on the West Coast trip, Haley Wan and Ashleigh Johnson led Princeton over the No. 16 Long Beach State 49ers, 7-2, on Mar. 22. Wan scored four times, giving her five consecutive hat tricks and eight straight multi-goal outings. Johnson held the 49ers without a goal for 26 minutes and 38 seconds of game time, making 15 saves.
The Tigers advanced to the CWPA Championship Game with an 8-7 victory over the No. 15 Hartwick College Hawks on Apr. 28. Kelleher continued her stellar play with a team-high three points (one goal, two assists) while Chelsea Johnson, Sydney Cheong and Eliza Britt had two goals each. Ashleigh Johnson stopped seven shots and collected four steals.
Awards:
CWPA All-Conference: Ashleigh Johnson (first team), Haley Wan (first team)
CWPA Championship All-Tournament Team: Ashleigh Johnson (first team), Haley Wan (first team), Chelsea Johnson (second team), Lindsey Kelleher (second team)

CWPA Defensive Player of the Week: Ashleigh Johnson (Feb. 6, Mar. 6, Mar. 20, May 1)
AAU Sullivan Award Finalist: Ashleigh Johnson
Peter J. Cutino Award Finalist: Ashleigh Johnson
Notes: Princeton reached the 20-win milestone for the fifth time in the last six seasons … Nicolao has won 20 games in all but three of his 19 seasons as head coach … The Class of 2017 won 133 games and two CWPA titles during their time at Princeton … The Tigers won 12 games against ranked opponents and seven contests vs. California teams … Haley Wan led the team with 67 goals and 99 points … Ashleigh Johnson had a team-high 54 steals and had 300 saves … Six different players had at least 20 goals.
Looking Ahead: Five of Princeton's 20+ goal scorers will return next season including Haley Wan. With a quality incoming freshman class, the Tigers will look to reach the 20-win milestone once more and get back to the CWPA Championship Game.
