Women's Lightweights Face No. 1 Stanford On Senior Day
May 06, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
One week after an impressive finish earned the Princeton women's lightweight rowing team a bronze medal at the Eastern Sprints, the Tigers will test themselves against the top-ranked boat in the nation in their final tune-up for the IRA national championships. Princeton, which rallied past Boston University and nearly pulled off a comeback over Wisconsin in a thrilling Sprints final last Sunday, will close out its regular season Saturday morning against the Cardinal in a race streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
"Our Sprints race last weekend confirmed our ability to walk back on the field, which we have been practicing throughout the season," senior co-captain Juliette Hackett said. "Our main goal going forward is to piece together a sharp start that puts us in a dominant position, a solid base in which we are racing every stroke, and a strong sprint to finish with our bow ahead. Because the margins were so close, we realize we have the base speed and that winning is a matter of racing well."
The winner of the 1V race will take the inaugural Class of 2016 Cup, which was introduced to this series prior to the season. A Princeton victory would bring the Tigers more than a trophy, though; it would likely infuse a great confidence before the two teams met again in California early next month for the IRA Championships.
The 1V race will begin at 9 am, with the varsity fours set to race at 9:15 am. Princeton will also try to send out its seniors — Juliette Hackett, Naomi Lake, Alicia Lamb, Sarah Lossing, Katie Mirabella, Teresa Rufin, Christina Warren — with a win in their final home race.
"I am excited that we are facing Stanford, a team that has had an impressive showing over the past several years, for my final home race," Hackett said. "Our team has never been one to back down from a challenge, and I am looking forward to showcasing our speed and racing aggressively. Our league is reaching a new level of competition - no team this year is undefeated and small margins separate several crews - and I know we are capable of making it a battle. And of course, racing on Carnegie always gives us extra motivation to defend our home turf."
The top-ranked Crimson is led by one of the all-time greats in Princeton rowing; 2016 Olympian Kate Bertko '06, who rowed in the bow seat for the undefeated 2006 NCAA champion open women, is in her first season as head coach at Stanford.
