Walton Leads Princeton Into Final Round at NCAA Regional
May 09, 2017 | Women's Golf
In a crowded field, Princeton freshman Maya Walton is in contention to advance to the NCAA finals as the NCAA regional at Georgia heads for Wednesday's final round.
The top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championships May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., as will the top three players not on those teams. Through two rounds, Alabama, Baylor, Michigan State, Clemson, Northwestern and Tennessee are those top six teams, with Tennessee standing at +12. Princeton is tied for 11th, 15 shots back of the Vols at +27.Â
Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho, who leads the field by a stroke at -6, College of Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck at -3 and North Carolina's Leslie Cloots at even par are in line for the individual bids to the NCAA finals through the first two rounds. Walton is in a group of seven players who are one shot back at +1, and six of those players are on teams not in the top six entering the final round.
Walton cut five strokes off her Monday score to turn in a 5-under 70 in Tuesday's round, closing her day by making birdie on three of the last four holes.
Princeton will start Wednesday's final round at 7:33 a.m. on the University of Georgia's course. Results via Golfstat are available here.
