(Updated at 4:05 pm with new start times for Saturday's semifinals)
The first day of the IRA national championships is all about advancement and energy conservation, and Princeton's three varsity eight boats took care of business Friday on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center to open its championship weekend.
The fifth-seeded varsity eight, which has medaled at each of the last two IRA Championships, finished a comfortable second in its morning heat to advance to Saturday's A/B semifinal. Fourth-seeded Harvard, the silver medalist at Sprints, took the win in 5:38.088, but the Tigers' attention was on the duo of Stanford and Wisconsin behind them.
Both crews were looking for that automatic berth in the semifinals, but the Tigers never let either make contact over the final 500 and qualified in 5:42.418.
Princeton will look to reach the 1V IRA grand final for a fifth straight year Saturday at 11:00 am ET (8:00 local) in the first of two A/B semifinals. The Tigers will have two of the top three seeds in the field (#1 Washington, #3 Yale), but it will be the next-highest seeded boat in a field that will send the top three to Sunday's championship race.
The 2V and the 3V both followed suit, with each taking second in their respective heats to qualify for the A/B semifinals. The best finish of the morning came in the 2V heat, where Harvard charged hard in the final 300 meters to catch Sprints champion Princeton at the line. While that will aid the Crimson seeding in the semifinal, Princeton had more than 11 seconds on third-place Wisconsin to easily qualify.
Third-seeded Princeton will race in a 11:56 pm ET (8:56 local) semifinal, which will include #2 California and #4 Yale. Three will advance to the final.
The 3V, which won gold at the IRA Championships last year, topped Dartmouth by more than 4.5 seconds to advance. Yale, the silver medalist at Sprints, finished first in the heat, while Princeton was less than four seconds behind. The Tigers will compete in the 12:20 pm ET (9:20 local) semifinal, which will include Pac-12 powers Washington and California.
The varsity four pushed California in its heat — where only one boat would directly advance — but the Bears won by less than 3.5 seconds. Princeton bounced back to win its rep and will advance to the semifinal.
