IRA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Live Results l Full Schedule l Princeton Preview l Princeton's History at the IRAs
For the fifth straight season, the Princeton heavyweights will be one of six boats racing for the IRA national championship.
The fifth-seeded heavyweights took care of business in their semifinal, and they will race Sunday at 3:30 pm ET (12:30 local) on Lake Natoma at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center to try to win the program's first title since 1998, and its fourth in program history. The Tigers placed all four of their boats (1V8, 2V8, 3V8, V4) in their respective grand finals; only California and Washington were the other programs to do that.
Princeton's 1V race was all about a top-three finish, and the Tigers made sure they held that position securely throughout the race. Both top-seeded Washington and third-seeded Yale charged hard in the final 200 meters looking for the top lane in the final — Washington won that — while Princeton needed only to fend off late charges by both Dartmouth and Yale to advance. The Tigers finished in 5:43.345, about 2.5 seconds faster than the fourth-place Big Green, to move into the final.
The Tigers will race from Lane 1 Sunday, and they will compete against (2) Yale, (3) Harvard, (4) Washington, (5) California, and (6) Brown.
The 2V semifinal took on a similar feel to the 1V, as two crews raced for the top lane assignment, while Princeton took the third spot. California held off Yale by less than half a second to win the semifinal, while Princeton topped fourth-place Brown by more than five seconds.
Princeton will race in the 2:20 (11:20 local) grand final out of lane 6, and it will be joined by (1) Boston University, (2) Yale, (3) Washington, (4) California, and (5) Harvard.
The Princeton 3V, which won gold at IRAs last year, earned the opportunity to defend that medal with a third-place finish in its heat. The two Western powers, Washington and California, went 1-2 in the semifinal, but the Tigers topped Boston University by more than 2.5 seconds to take the final qualifying spot.
Princeton will race in the 2:00 (11:00 local) grand final out of lane 6 and will be joined by (1) Navy, (2) Yale, (3) Washington, (4) Harvard, and (5) California.
The varsity four, which raced twice yesterday after just missing an opening heat win, had more than enough speed to qualify for its final. California took the semifinal in 6:19.618, but Princeton was second by less than 2.5 seconds. The V4 will race at 12:30 (9:30 local) out of lane 5 against (1) Brown, (2) Boston University, (3) Washington, (4) California, and (6) Marietta.
