Strong Pre-Ivy Slate Highlights Exciting Schedule For Reigning Champion Volleyball Team
July 12, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Trips to Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C., as well as a home showdown with Seton Hall, will serve as a strong preparation for a Princeton women's volleyball team that will be aiming for a third straight Ivy League championship this fall. The Tigers will compete in three tough weekend tournaments before opening the Ivy season Friday, Sept. 22, against Penn at Dillon Gym.
Princeton, which returned to the NCAA Tournament last year and pushed #10 BYU in a pair of tough sets before ultimately falling, will open the 2017 season Sept. 1 against Boston College in the opening match of the Beantown Challenge. The Tigers will also face North Texas on Sept. 1, and they will close the weekend Saturday at 2 pm against a Bryant squad that won 19 matches last season.
The Tigers will make their home debut Wednesday, Sept. 6, against Seton Hall. The Pirates, who won 16 matches last season before falling to top-seeded Creighton in the Big East Tournament, faced Princeton in the 2016 Rutgers Tournament, a match the Tigers won 3-1.
Two days after the Seton Hall match, Princeton will head to Philadelphia for the Villanova Tournament, which opens Sept. 8 with a 1:30 match against a Wildcat squad that won 18 matches last season. Princeton will face Albany, which fell in the 2016 America East championship match, later that day, and then will take on Connecticut Saturday. Each of the four teams during the weekend tournament will be coming off winning seasons.
It won't get any easier in the final weekend of pre-Ivy League play. Princeton will head to the American Volleyball Challenge, which will feature three teams that reached the 2016 NCAA Tournament and one team from the best volleyball conference in the NCAA, the Big Ten. The Tigers open the weekend Sept. 15 at 7 pm in a showdown with host and reigning Patriot League champion American, and they will continue the following day with a noon showdown against MEAC champion Howard. They will conclude play at 5 pm against the University of Iowa, which went 19-13 last season and suffered the majority of its losses against Top-15 competition.
Princeton will head into Ivy League play Sept. 22 against the Penn Quakers, and will have three more league weekends during the fall:
• Oct. 6-7 (Dartmouth 7, Harvard 5)
• Oct. 27-28 (Yale 7, Brown 5)
• Nov. 3-4 (Columbia 7, Cornell 5)
