Lussi '17 Inks Deal With NWSL's Portland Thorns
July 02, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Back in January, the Portland Thorns selected Princeton's then-senior Tyler Lussi with the 21st overall pick in the National Women's Soccer League draft.Â
Just short of six months later, now with her final semester at Princeton complete and her history degree in hand, Lussi has signed to play with Portland.
"We are excited to add Tyler to the roster after her performance in training the last two weeks," Portland coach Mark Parsons said in the team's official announcement. "She is an attacking player that can play in any of the front three positions and brings a tireless work ethic every time she touches the field."
Lussi used those qualities to become Princeton's all-time leading goal (53) and point (122) scorer, helping the team to the 2015 Ivy League title and the second round of the NCAA tournament while earning NSCAA second-team All-America honors.
The Thorns are in a battle for the final playoff spot in the 10-team NWSL, which moves the top four teams on to the postseason. Portland lost a 2-0 game to Seattle Saturday night to stand in fifth place, one point back of New Jersey's Sky Blue FC, and the Thorns have 12 more matches on the docket before the regular season ends on Sept. 30.
