Princeton Rowing Fares Well At 2017 Henley Rowing Regatta
July 06, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
Past, present and future Princeton rowers made their way to one of the most prestigious regattas in the world last week, and they made a strong impression at the 2017 Henley Royal Regatta.
Senior (all class years listed will be for the upcoming season) Tom George competed in the highlight event of the week, the Grand Challenge 8+, with the British National Team, which raced as Leander Club and Newcastle University. The boat fell by one length in the final to the German National Team (Passau & Treviris Trier), a crew that recently set the world record.
George could get another chance to knock off the German crew this weekend, as he was chosen for the British M8+ for the Lucerne World Cup event.
Two of George's teammates in the Princeton crew that defeated California and placed fourth at the IRA Championships also competed at Henley. Sophomore David Bewicke-Copley rowed with the British U23 National Team (Molesey B.C. & London R.C.) in the Ladies' Challenge Plate competition. After winning its heat and defeating the Brown crew by a length in the semifinal, the boat fell in the final to Oxford Brookes University & Taurus B.C. by ¾ of a length in the final.
Franco D'Agostino, who won gold in the 2V at Sprints and ended his Princeton career with the 1V fourth-place finish at IRAs, joined Fred Vystavel '16, junior Cameron Kerr, lightweight sophomore Oscar Artz Jones, and incoming freshman Oswald Stocker in the Elizabethan Boat Club crew for the Ladies' Challenge Plate competition. It drew the unlucky heat against eventual champion Oxford, although it pushed the crew before falling by 2/3 of a length.
Another member of the Class of 2017, Matthew Benstead, raced with the Leander Club & Griffin B.C. in the Stewards' Challenge Cup (M4-). After a win in the heat, it fell to Team Italia by 2/3 of a length in the semifinal.
Two members of the Class of 2016 had strong weeks as well. Patrick Eble, a four-year member of the Princeton 1V, competed for Cambridge University in the Visitors' Challenge Cup (M4-). The boat earned three wins to reach the final, where it fell to the Leander Club by less than a length. Eble will take that experience back to the U.S., where he will compete with the U.S. Senior National Team throughout the summer.
Ed Northrop was part of the winning N.S.R. Oslo, Norway crew for the Brittania Challenge Cup (M4+). The crew won four races, including two by only a ½ length, in a tightly contested field.
Senior Ben Lawton, junior Andrew Morgan, and sophomore Sebastian Benzecry each raced in the Visitors' Challenge Cup 4- for London Rowing Club; the boat fell to Taurus B.C. before the semifinals.
Incoming Tigers Jens Clausen, Harry Higginbottom, and Gordon Johnson also competed at Henley. Higginbottom raced with the Leander Club in the Thames Challene Cup (M8+) and reached the semifinal, while Jens Clausen raced for Molesey Boat Club in the Wyfold Challenge Cup 4-. Gordon Johnson '21 raced for Deerfield Academy in the Prince Albert Cup 4+ and made it to the second round losing to the eventual winner.
