SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman Frankie DeRosa tallied his first collegiate goal as Princeton played to a 1-1 double overtime draw with No. 8 Syracuse in the Tigers' season opener.
Â
DeRosa buried a Daniel Bowkett rebound to put Princeton the board at 69:36.
After Kamal Miller was dealt a red card in the 74th minute, Syracuse was forced to play a man down. John-Austin Ricks chipped a shot from 30 yards out over goalkeeper Jacob Schachner to knot the game in the 84th minute.
Â
Neither team was able to convert in the final 26 minutes.
Â
"It's tough whenever you go on the road, especially against a very good team like Syracuse," Benjamin Issroff said. "With it being our first game of the year and their third I thought we did quite well and we were on top for most of the game. The draw feels a bit of a disappointment in that we had a lot more chances, I thought, and should have been able to put the game away. But overall it was a great first step for our team and makes me very excited for the rest of our season."
Â
Schachner made a career-high four saves in the draw. He stopped the first opportunity, a through ball that turned into an odd-man rush. Another impressive save came on a free kick about 22 yards out because of an inadvertent hand ball, and then he pulled down a corner in the 42nd minute.
The Tigers were solid defensively, with Issroff anchoring, and two freshmen in the mix. They did a great job of working the Orange off the ball the first time they were able to get it down low in the 20th minute.
Â
James Reiner and Kevin O'Toole teamed up for the first opportunities for the Tigers with O'Toole not being able to get a solid connection on the first touch before Reiner's final touch went high. DeRosa had his first chance in the 15th minute when he found himself one-on-one with keeper Hendrick Hilpert. Hilpert made the stop at the top of the six and the ball went out for a corner kick. O'Toole had the best chance for the Tigers in the first half as he shot was bobbled by Hilpert before the Orange cleared.
Â
A Tiger goal was called off in the 74th minute on the free kick awarded on Miller's red card. Matthew Mangini took the kick and it was knocked in by Jeremy Colvin but the officials flag went up to signal an offsides.
Â
Colvin had a couple more chances to score. He picked up a through ball that Hilpert stopped low between his legs. His other chances came near the end of regulation, a header that went just wide of the left post.
Â
Schachner came up big again when he reached out for a ball that rolled off his fingertips and out of play. It came just a minute before Ricks net the equalizer in the 84th.
Â
The goal gave Syracuse momentum, but Princeton's defense stood tall as they were able to thread missed opportunities through the midfield to the attacking third.
Â
Princeton faces Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. The Raiders picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 win over Northwestern this afternoon in the other game of the Central New York Classic.
