Rutgers Sneaks by Princeton 1-0
September 26, 2017 | Men's Soccer
The offense was there. The defense was there. Princeton outshot Rutgers 19-4 but it was goal by Miles Hackett in the 55th minute that made the difference lifting the Scarlet Knights to a 1-0 win on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The goal came on the Scarlet Knights first shot on goal, and by the end of 90 they had just two total shots on goal. Dante Perez launched a through ball from the midfield line ahead to Hackett. Hackett who was being tagged by defender Henry Martin was able to sneak by and then split a pair of defenders to find the twine.
Princeton offense came out of the gates with senior Daniel Bowkett shooting just high of the cross bar in the first two minutes. Junior Jeremy Colvin tried to knock in a restart but it was grabbed by goalkeeper Rafael Pereira. Freshman Michael Osei Wusu hit the cross bar from the left flank in the 8th and Colvin had a big opportunity when he was all alone in the box when he picked up a through ball but Pereira was quick on his feet to make the stop in the 22nd. Freshman defender Richard Wolf nearly headed in his first career goal on a Cole Morokhovich set piece in the 30th.
It took 33 minutes before Rutgers could get a shot past the Princeton defense, and it came off its first corner kick of the game. Princeton had two more corners in the game, 5-3.
Off the bench in the second half freshman Gaby Paniagua had a few chances, one that went off the tips of Pereira's gloves, and another off a Colvin cross on the left side. Sophomore Bobby Hickson also had back-to-back shots on goal in the 84th.
Pereira made seven saves in his second win of the season as Rutgers moves to 2-7-1 overall.
Princeton, now 1-4-2, begins Ivy League play on Saturday at Dartmouth. Game time is at 4:30 p.m., in Hanover.
