NEWARK, Del. – The No. 3 Delaware Blue Hens used a three-goal burst in the first 12 minutes of the game to drop the No. 8 Princeton Tigers, 5-3, at Fred P. Rullo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
It was the Tigers with the first scoring chance almost four minutes into the contest. Clara Roth scooted by a defender and got the shot past the goalie, but Delaware's Kayla Devlin stopped the ball from getting over the line.
Â
In the seventh minute, Delaware got on the board right off a corner as Kiki Bink ripped a shot into the back of a cage. In the 10th minute, Femke Strien tipped in an attempt from Taylor Lister about four yards out to make the contest, 2-0. Not long after, Greta Nauck, who led the NCAA in scoring last season, posted her fourth tally of the year.
Â
Princeton got momentum in the 29th minute as Julianna Tornetta recorded her first collegiate goal, lifting the ball over Delaware goalie's Emmeline Oltmans that hit off of Devlin's stick and went into the back of the cage.
Â
The defending national champion, Delaware, got another tally from Bink off a corner, three minutes into the second half. Trailing by three, the Tigers had a great scoring threat with four consecutive corners, but the Oltmans made two stops while two others attempts couldn't get through.
Â
Finally, Princeton broke through in the 47th minute as Roth went on a breakaway and sent the ball high into the back of the cage after avoiding Oltmans. On a free-hit outside the circle, Ryan McCarthy found Julianna Tornetta, who got around Oltmans and blasted in her second goal of game in the 49th minute, setting the score at 4-3.
Â
Delaware looked for breathing room with a corner in the 52nd minute, but Nauck's shot hit the post. On the next trip down the field, McCarthy found a streaking Sophia Tornetta, but her shot was sent away.
Â
On Princeton's seventh corner of the matchup, McCarthy riffled a scoring chance that was just wide of the net and out of the reach for a deflection as the clock read 9:30 remaining.
Â
The Tigers' last threat came on a corner with four and half minutes left. Julianna Tornetta sent the ball into the circle while MaryKate Neff came up with the deflection that was just off the mark.
Â
Delaware added an insurance tally as Nauck tapped in her second of the day off a corner with under two and half minutes to go.
Â
Roth led the Tigers with five shots while the Tornetta sisters and McCarthy each had at least two shots each. Baylis made five saves in the loss.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team dropped to 0-2 on the season while No. 3 Delaware improved to 3-1. The Tigers welcome Rutgers on Friday (4 p.m.) to Bedford Field before a meeting vs. No. 7 Penn State on Sunday (12 p.m.). Â
