Givens Scores Twice to Lead No. 14 Princeton Past Dartmouth, 2-0
September 30, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Abby Givens scored twice in the final 21 minutes Saturday at Dartmouth, helping to lift the 14th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-0 win in the Tigers' first Ivy League road game.
The goals were the seventh and eighth for the season for the sophomore, who co-leads the Ivy with Columbia's Natalie Neshat.
Classmate Natalie Grossi and the back line extended their shutout streak to 341:43 as Princeton authored its eighth shutout of the season and the seventh for Grossi. The clean sheet puts Grossi just three short of tying the program record for shutouts in a season, set by Kelly O'Dell '84 with 10 in 1981, and the program record for team shutouts in a season is 13, set in 2000.Â
Givens' first goal came when, off a throw in, sophomore Courtney O'Brien won a ball off a Dartmouth defender about 30 yards out and fed it to Givens, who worked her way just inside the 18-yard box and fired past a diving Big Green keeper Mariel Gordon. Givens doubled the lead 13 minutes later when she took a pass along the sideline from sophomore Olivia Sheppard and worked the ball around a pair of Dartmouth defenders before firing it just inside the left post.
The two-goal game was Givens' third of her career, all this season, joining her two-goal games against Monmouth and Delaware.
Princeton will have a quick turnaround before heading to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. start Tuesday. The Bison will enter the game on both a six-game winning streak and a six-game shutout streak after beating Holy Cross 3-0 Saturday.
