Wrestlings Heads To #21 Rider, Hosts F&M, During Final Matches Before Ivy League Competition
January 12, 2018 | Wrestling
Chris Ayres set the 2017-18 Princeton wrestling schedule for the sole reason to have his team ready for EIWA and Ivy League competition, as well as for the postseason.
On Saturday, we'll start to get a sense of just how ready the team has become.
Princeton opened its season with six straight opponents ranked inside the Top 25, and four inside the Top 10, a stretch that concludes Saturday at 1:00 when the Tigers head to nearby Rider and face the 21st-ranked Broncs. Following that match, the Tigers will get back on the bus and head to Dillon Gym, where it will move back into EIWA competition with a 5 pm dual against F&M. That match will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
While the schedule has taken its toll on the overall team record — Princeton enters the weekend with an 0-5 mark — there have been plenty of impressive individual performances early this season. Returning All-American Matthew Kolodzik is currently ranked eighth at 149 pounds and carries a 13-4 record into the weekend. Freshman Patrick Brucki hopes to match Kolodzik's accomplishments from last season by becoming an All-American on his first try, and he is off to a terrific start this season; Brucki leads Princeton with 17 victories this season, including a Midlands win over 5th-ranked Jake Smith of West Virginia, and has moved to 18th in the latest InterMat poll.
Junior Mike D'Angelo, who began to turn heads late last season, brings a 15-6 record into the weekend, and five of his six losses have come to nationally ranked opponents. He pushed #5 Alec Pantaleo of Michigan in a tight 4-3 loss last weekend, and now he is entering the part of the season when he began to shine as a sophomore.
Rider enters the weekend with a 5-2 record, and is led by senior Chad Walsh, the nation's third-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds. Walsh could be set for a second matchup with Princeton senior Jonathan Schleifer this season; the two met at the NWCA All-Star Dual in Jadwin Gym, with Walsh scoring a hard-fought 6-4 win. Teammate B.J. Clagon is ranked 15th at 157 and will be another challenging opponent for D'Angelo, who has shown an impressive ability to raise his level against top competiton.
Franklin & Marshall enters the weekend with a 1-6 record, including recent losses to both Rider and Drexel. Junior heavyweight Antonio Pelusi leads the team with 14 wins, including eight in his last nine matches, and he is a former NCAA Championships qualifier for the Diplomats. Freshmen Brett Kulp and Will Gil represent a bright future for the team, as they have combined for 25 wins at the lower weights.
