Four Straight Pins Sends Princeton Past F&M In EIWA Return; D'Angelo Adds Another Ranked Win At Rider
January 13, 2018 | Wrestling
Four straight falls by members of four different classes led the Princeton wrestling team to an impressive 37-9 victory over EIWA rival Franklin & Marshall in the Tigers' first home match of 2018. It completed a doubleheader day for the Tigers, who challenged 21st-ranked Rider in a tight 21-12 loss. Junior co-captain Mike D'Angelo had Princeton's biggest win of the day, a 9-3 decision over former All-American BJ Clagon.
After dropping six straight team matches to Top-25 competition, Princeton jumped all over F&M in a Saturday night dual in Dillon Gym. Sophomore Matteo DeVincenzo capped a perfect Saturday with a 10-5 decision, and then freshman Mark Schleifer picked up his first collegiate win by a 7-1 score. Junior Pat D'Arcy defeated one of F&M's top newcomers, Brett Kulp, thanks to a riding time point, and eighth-ranked Matthew Kolodzik scored a 20-7 major decision over Wilfredo Gil.
After a Tiger forfeit at 157, Princeton began its run of pins with a second-period fall by three-time NCAA qualifier Jonathan Schleifer. Then came junior Matthew Gancayco, who had no interest in seeing a second period.
Led by third-ranked Chad Walsh, Rider was able to fight off the upset with four straight wins, though Brucki did move to heavyweight and grab an 8-6 decision.
Princeton will now break for finals, but it will begin Ivy League competition Feb. 3 at Harvard.

Next up was sophomore Kevin Parker, who had full control over Steven Mercadante throughout their match at 184. Parker was actually in position for a technical fall, but he was able to turn the F&M freshman for the fall. That set the table for 18th-ranked freshman Patrick Brucki, who got his team-best 19th victory of the season in style. Here is the full Matthew Gancayco match. Princeton opened the day with a strong challenge against the 21st-ranked Broncs. Decisions by DeVincenzo and Kolodzik put Princeton in good position early, and then D'Angelo built on an early lead for a 9-3 decision over 15th-ranked BJ Clagon. It was D'Angelo's second win of the season over a Top-20 opponent, and should make him a prime candidate to finally break into the national rankings.18th-ranked Patrick Brucki keeps the pin train going and picks up his team-best 19th win of the season. pic.twitter.com/4IkqHhhy3h
