Akosa Sprints to School Records as Princeton Wins HYP

BOSTON (1/28/18) - The Princeton men's track & field team dominated this weekend's annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet (HYP) at Gordon Track this afternoon. The team finished with a total score of 99 points, outscoring Harvard by 48 points and Yale by 66. This win marks the Tiger's 26th consecutive victory of this meet.
Sending shock waves throughout the field house was the stellar performance by senior Carrington Akosa. The sprinter who suffered an injury at outdoor Ivy Heps last spring proved he is right back to prime form as he set two Princeton records with wins in both the 60 and 200. In the 60, after putting up a 6.74 in the prelims matched his program record of 6.73. In the 200 Akosa ran a blistering 21.34 for a new record, surpassing his No. 1 mark of 21.39 from last winter. Outdoors, Akosa owns his PR in the event t 21.09. Following Akosa in the 60 was junior Charlie Volker who took third at 6.90, while sophomore Daniel Afolabi was fifth at 7.00.

The Tigers dominated the field events, placing first in every single event. Senior Lane Russell won the triple jump after clearing a monster PR of 15.79 (51-09.75) as the third best jump in Princeton history. His previous best was a 15.44, as he jumped three places on Princeton's top-10 chart. Junior Stefan Amokwandoh took second with a 14.88 (48-10.00).
Senior Mitchel Charles cleared a PR of 18.18 (59-07.75) in the weight throw to place first. He was also placed in the shot put with a 17.12 (56-02.00). Freshmen Samuel Wright and Kelton Chastulik came in second and third in the shot put with respective throws of 15.44 (50-08.00) and 15.11 (49-07.00).
Princeton has tremendous depth in the high jump this season. Freshman Jeffrey Hollis jumped 2.08 (6-09.75) to take the win. Junior Andrew Diehl and freshman Jeffrey Lee-Heidenreich tied for second behind him with equal jumps of 2.04 (6-08.25).
In his first collegiate appearance, freshman Gilron Tsabkevich cleared 7.19 (23-07.25) in the long jump to get the gold for the Tigers.
Senior August Kiles came out on top in the pole vault with a 5.15Â (16-10.75), and looks ready to retain his title, for the third time, at indoor Ivy Heps next month.
In the middle distance events, sophomore Connor Matthews crossed the finish line with a PR of 48.62 in the 400 dash. Senior Josh Freeman was a mere .01 seconds behind him in second place. Sophomore Gab Montefalcone and junior Cole Bransford placed second and third in the 500 race with finishing times of 1:05.32 and 1:05.42. Freshman Sam Ellis came in second for the men's 800 race by just .6 seconds with a time of 1:55.69 behind Harvard's Ryan Thrush.
Senior Garrett O'Toole placed first in the mile with a time of 4:05.40 and teammate Perrin Have trailed behind him in third with a PR of 4:12.05. Fellow senior Noah Kauppila won the 1000 race with a final time of 2:23.16.
Princeton had three consecutive finishes in 3000 race starting in second with sophomore Gannon Willcutts at 8:12.60, freshman Matt Grossman at 8:15.71 and sophomore Viraj Deokar at 8:17.72.
Both relay the 4x800 and the 4x400 came in second place for the Tigers.
The Tigers will next compete in the Villanova Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island.
