Sucharda and Frankel Earn Weekly Honors
January 09, 2018 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team took down No. 5 Cornell in dominant fashion on Friday night, 5-2 and then went toe-to-toe with No. 4 Colgate, falling in the final minutes, 3-2. For their outstanding efforts freshman Sharon Frankel was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week and junior Stephanie Sucharda was named the GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week presented by Suburban Transit.
Frankel had a two-point weekend, won 15 of 23 face offs (65.2%) and had three blocks, the most by a non-defender in the league. In the win over the Big Red, she had the primary assist on the equalizer in the second period before the Tigers added three more goals. On Saturday, she scored at 8:22 of the second as Princeton came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game on Frankel's third tally of the year.
Sucharda was a huge factor, both offensively and defensively over the weekend.. She tallied her first two goals of the season and held the top-ranked opponents to just five goals on the weekend while blocking four shots. On Friday she finished +3 against the Big Red and scored the equalizer in the second period, to make it 2-2 before the Tigers added three more goals. Down 2-0 to Colgate on Saturday, Sucharda sparked a two-goal run less than two minutes into the third before Colgate net the game-winner with less than four minutes to play.
Princeton continues league play this weekend, Jan. 12 & 13, hosting Brown on Friday night at 6 p.m., and Yale on Saturday at 3 p.m.
