October 14, 2018 | Men's Water Polo
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Trailing by as many as four goals, the No. 14 Princeton Tigers roared back for an impressive 12-11 victory over the No. 17 Bucknell Bison at Blodgett Pool on Sunday morning.
Bucknell saw the first separation of the contest, posting three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. The Bison, again, rolled off three consecutive tallies, going ahead, 6-2, with 6:16 left in the half. The two nationally ranked foes exchanged rallies before the Bison took an 8-4 halftime advantage.
The third quarter turned into the Ryan Wilson show as he recorded a hat trick in the eight-minute session as the Tigers climbed within one, 9-8. Bucknell, briefly, slowed down Princeton' momentum, securing the first goal of the fourth quarter, but Wilson and Payne quickly tied the game at 10-all as the clock ticked under five minutes. It was the first time that game was tied since the 3:10 mark of the first stanza.
Payne's tally with 2:36 left put the Tigers ahead for the first time since scoring the first goal of the game.
This impressive behind the back shot from Wilson gave the senior his fourth goal of the contest, but more importantly gave Princeton an insurance tally.
