Princeton Improves In CWPA Varsity Poll, Ready For NWPC Contest vs. Iona

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 12 Princeton Tigers continues Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) action as they travel to Iona this Friday (Oct. 19). The game will get started at 7 p.m. and be streamed online here.
Princeton is 12-6 overall and 3-4 in the NWPC. The Tigers took two at the Crimson Invitational last weekend, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (14-9) and then-No. 17 Bucknell (12-11). The Tigers were down by four goals against Bucknell before rallying to a victory. For his performance at the Invitational, Ryan Wilson was named NWPC Player of the Week.
No. 13 Harvard remains the top team in the NWPC with a 5-1 record. St. Francis-Brooklyn is second at 4-1, Brown, at 4-2, is third, followed by Princeton, MIT (1-5) and Iona (0-4).
The Tigers have never lost to Iona in 27 games all-time. Princeton picked up two victories last season against Iona, securing 12-6 and 17-9 decisions.
Matt Payne leads the group with 45 goals and .450 shooting percentage. He now has 210 career goals, 44 shy of John Stover '06 for the most in program history. He is five shy of his third straight 50+ goal season. The senior has added a team-best 35 drawn ejections along with 23 assists and eight blocks. Wilson has 57 points this season, securing 25 goals and 32 assists while drawing 24 ejections and swiping 15 passes.
Alec Mendelsohn is third on the team with 24 goals. Five other players have registered at least 10+ goals this season. Ryan Melosini and Billy Motherway have shared time at goalie for Princeton, putting up a combined .519 save percentage.
USC made the jump to No. 1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Poll from No. 3. Stanford, UCLA, Calif., UC-Santa Barba round out the top five. Princeton is now the top East Coast school in the poll, in front of No. 13 Harvard.
