No. 9 Harvard Earns 3-1 Decision Over No. 3 Princeton
October 20, 2018 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 9 Harvard Crimson (12-1, 5-0 Ivy) earned a 3-1 win over the No. 3 Princeton Tigers (11-4, 4-1 Ivy) at Bedford Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Sophia Tornetta scored her 27th career goal with under four minutes to go for the lone Tigers' tally. Her seven goals this season are two shy of her career best set in 2016.
Â
Harvard posted the first goal of the Ivy matchup six minutes in as Bente van Vlijmen whipped a shot directly off a corner into the cage.
Â
Sometime later, Hannah Davey dribbled around a defender and blasted a shot that was high for Princeton's first threat of the game. In the 17th minute, Maddie Bacskai's shot was knocked wide. Several moments later, Casey Allen picked up a rebound off a corner attempt and got it in, giving the Crimson a 2-0 lead.
Â
Princeton collected three consecutive corners with five minutes left in the first half, but Harvard's Ellie Shahbo laid out and denied the home unit's only shot on cage.
Â
In the second half, the home squad had another excellent scoring chance, recording two straight corners, but a defensive save from Emily Duarte and a sprawling stop with her right arm from Shahbo, again, kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Â
The Crimson pushed in another goal as Tessel Huibregsten hit in a rebound off a save from Grace Baylis with 25 minutes to go.
Â
This was Tornetta's goal as she corralled her first attempt and sent it through …
Â
The Tigers complete the road portion of the 2018 schedule at Cornell next Saturday (Oct. 27). The game will get underway at 11:30 a.m., and will be streamed on ESPN+.
