It was certainly a thrilling conclusion to the 2017-18 season, which saw Princeton repeat a Top-3 team finish at the EIWA Championships, and then Matthew Kolodzik knocked off one top seed after another to place third at the 2018 NCAA Championships. When you include a Top-10 recruiting class and a strong group of returners, there is no shortage of optimism for the 2018-19 season.
That optimism turns into reality this weekend, as Princeton will officially open a new season this Sunday in Jadwin Gym. Thirteen teams (see full list below) will open competition at 9 am, with an expected finish time of 6:30 pm. The field has been full for several months now, a testament to the success of the 2017 event. Fans who can't make it to Jadwin Gym will be able to watch all 10 mats exclusively on ESPN+; links for all mats are available below.
The tournament is officially full now.
Princeton enters the season with the nation's top-ranked wrestler (based on FloWrestling preseason ranks) at 149 pounds in junior Matthew Kolodzik, as well as the 7th-ranked wrestler at 197 (Patrick Brucki). Kolodzik will actually make his debut Friday night at the 2018 NWCA All-Star Classic. The two-time All-American and EIWA champion will face eighth-ranked Mitch Finesilver of Duke. While Finesilver would be a challenging opponent anywhere in the nation — he is a three-time NCAA qualifier with a 62-25 career record — the Blue Devil senior will be the lone competitor in the 2018 Classic who comes from Colorado.
Kolodzik experienced the home advantage last year, when Jadwin Gym served as the host of the 2017 All-Star Classic, and he built on that to another historic season for the Tigers. Kolodzik had plenty of highlights along the way, including a second-straight EIWA title, but nothing matched his NCAA Championships effort in Cleveland. Kolodzik took out #2 Brandon Sorenson (Iowa), #3 Grant Leeth (Missouri), #4 Troy Heilmann (North Carolina), and #6 Justin Oliver (Central Michigan) on his way to 3rd-place finish, Princeton's best since Greg Parker placed 2nd in 2002.
