Kuffner Leads No. 18 Princeton To Weekend Sweep With 4-1 Win Over RPI
November 10, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
The legacy of the six senior members of the Princeton men's hockey team is already secure, what with that ECAC championship banner from last season that they did so much to hang in Hobey Baker Rink.
Of course there's still the matter of the icing on that cake that the Class of 2019 is working on for its final act, and Princeton's 4-1 win over RPI Saturday night was one more step down that road. It came on a night when the pregame featured the seniors and their parents as part of Senior Parents weekend, and also on a night when that class once again showed just what it is capable of doing.
The win followed Friday night's 4-3 overtime win over Union and completed a weekend sweep of the two New York Capital Region teams for the first time since 2008 and the first home sweep since 2006. Princeton, after an opening loss at Penn State, is now 3-0-1 in its last four games, all in the ECAC.
Princeton had a four-goal, six-assist night against RPI as a team, and all but one of those came from the seniors. The game even ended with four saves by senior goalie Austin Shaw in the second appearance of his career.
Ryan Kuffner had two goals and two assists as Princeton did all of its scoring in the first 28 minutes of the game. The Tigers outshot RPI 43-20 for the night, and Ryan Ferland, just a sophomore, needed to make only 15 saves without allowing a goal in his 50 minutes before turning it over to Shaw.
Alex Riche had a pair of assists, including one on the prettiest goal of the night, when he intercepted a pass in front of the cage and then dropped it for Kuffner, who, as the nation's leader in goals per game a year ago, knows how to finish from there.
Jackson Cressey, a junior, started the scoring 11 minutes in, with assists to Kuffner and Josh Teves. The second goal came less than three minutes later from Teves, with assists to Kuffner and Max Veronneau. Riche set up Kuffner in front again for the fourth Tiger goal.
RPI spoiled the shutout with 4:32 to play and pulled its goalie shortly after that but could not score again.
Princeton is at Colgate and Cornell this coming weekend.
