No. 4 Princeton's 2018 Season Ends In National Semifinal Against No. 2 Maryland, 1-0
November 16, 2018 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE – The No. 2 Maryland Terrapins (22-2) earned a spot in the National Championship game with a 1-0 overtime victory over the No. 4 Princeton Tigers (15-5) at Trager Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Â
Princeton's first scoring threat came just five minutes, as it picked up a corner. Julianna Tornetta's chance was denied by the Terrapins goalie while MaryKate Neff's follow-up was also sent away.
Â
Another great chance for the Tigers came with under nine minutes to go in the first half. On a corner, Julianna Tornetta sent a tap-in ball to Clara Roth, but the pass was just off the mark.
Â
The Terrapins picked up a corner right before the end of the half, but the initial shot was blocked away by Roth.
Â
Princeton thought it had a penalty stroke seven minutes into the second half. Julianna Tornetta found a streaking Roth down the field and she whipped a shot that was saved, but on the rebound a stroke was rewarded. Maryland asked for a review and the play was changed to a corner. Princeton couldn't produce a shot on the next play.
Â
The Tigers secured consecutive corner tries in the 56th minute, but one attempt was blocked and another shot was wide.
Â
Maryland began to bring offensive pressure with the clock ticking under seven minutes. Nike Lorenz's hard ball in the left side of the circle went wide before Linnea Gonzales' attempt was high and wide a short time later.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's group nabbed two more corners as time ran under two minutes. The first try hit the foot of a Terrapin defender leading to another. On that try, the Tigers scored on a redirect, but the official deemed it too dangerous and waved it off.
Â
There were no other scoring opportunities before time expired. It was just the second semifinal or final in NCAA Tournament history to go scoreless through regulation (the first in 1989).
Â
With two minutes to go in the extra session, Maryland's Bibi Donraadt slipped through two defenders and whacked a shot that hit off of Grace Baylis' stick and went into the cage.
Â
The Tigers finished with a 7-6 shot advantage and 9-2 lead in corners.
Â
With the loss, this ends the careers of Nicole Catalino, Jane Donio-Enscoe, Annabeth Donovan, Sarah Holland, Casey Swezey, Sophia Tornetta and Elise Wong. The group was part of four Ivy League titles and six NCAA Tournament appearances. During their time at Princeton, the Class of 2019 has posted a .626 winning percentage and an incredible .904 winning percentage in Ivy play.
