MADISON, Wisc. (11/18/18) - The Princeton men's cross country team finished 22nd at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships this afternoon on the Zimmerman Championship Course. The Tigers started off strong, in 11th place at the 2k mark before falling off and losing one runner in the race.
At the 2k mark Princeton was 11th as a team with Conor Lundy and Matt Grossman leading the way with a split time of 5:49. Jeremy Spiezio and Gannon Willcutts wer just two-three seconds back. At the next split, Spiezio had dropped back and would eventually drop from the race with a nagging injury. Lundy maintained the lead at 12:18 with Grossman at 12:20, Willcutts 12:25 and Krahn 12:29. The four sustained Princeton through 6k as the team moved into 19th as a squad. Lundy was 89th with a 6k split of 18:09, Grossman was at 18:11 and Willcutts 18:15 and Krahn 18:35.
With 2k remaining Grossman took over the top spot for the Tigers at 24:32 while Willcutts and Lundy were one second back at 24:33.
The trio came across the line together 100-101-102 with Willcutts first at 30:36.94 with Lundy right behind at 30:37.28 and Grossman at 30:37.55. Krahn finished 170th overall at 31:15.70 and Ed Trippas was the final scorer at 31:50.70. Deokar closed with a time of 32:16.85 for 225th place.
"Today was a tough day," head coach Jason Vigilante said after the race. "We entered the meet ranked 23rd and had aspirations of placing higher. A week ago we ran the Regional meet without our No. 4 man Jeremy Spiezio and we were able to win. Twenty-second place is an improvement on last year and we return everyone so we certainly have some optimism for the years ahead."
Princeton won its 20th Ivy Heps title with all five scorers claiming all-league honors. The Tigers had four earn all-region honors as the Princeton repeated as Mid-Atlantic Regional championship. Vigilante was named both the Ivy League and Mid-Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year.
