Wisconsin Claims Finale, Rallies For 22-18 Home Win Over Princeton
November 18, 2018 | Wrestling
Princeton learned plenty about its freshman class, and what it can become this season, in a hard-fought 22-18 loss at 15th-ranked Wisconsin Sunday afternoon in the Tigers' first match ever at the Field House. Two freshmen earned wins, including one over a ranked opponent, while two others nearly topped ranked foes in a dual that wasn't decided until the heavyweight match.
Princeton got wins from its trio of ranked wrestlers, including a second-period fall by 7th-ranked sophomore Patrick Brucki, but it was a victory from freshman Quincy Monday over 18th-ranked Zander Wick that set the stage for the possible upset. Monday, who pushed 13th-ranked Kaleb Young of Iowa Friday in a 7-4 loss, grabbed a lead over Wick in the second period and used four near-fall points in the third to lead to an 11-7 decision.
That victory followed a win by top-ranked Matthew Kolodzik at 149; those wins, combined with a forfeit victory by 125-pounder Patrick Glory, helped the Tigers to a 12-7 heading towards a strong part of the Badgers' lineup. Wisconsin won the next three, and after a fall by Brucki to give the Tigers an 18-17 lead, 17th-ranked Trent Hillger gave his home crowd a final cheer with a clinching win at heavyweight.
Tiger freshmen Marshall Keller (141) and Travis Stefanik (174) both fell to ranked opponents, but both showed just why they were big parts of Princeton's highest-ranked recruiting class in program history. Facing 13th-ranked Tristan Moran, Keller fought back from an early hole and nearly pulled off the upset in a 9-8 loss, while Stefanik held a 4-2 lead in the third before getting turned by 19th-ranked Ryan Christensen in a 6-4 loss.
The schedule doesn't let up for Princeton, which will head to reigning EIWA champion Lehigh Nov. 30 for a night match at Stabler Arena.
