Ivy Champions Asom, Driscoll Earn Top Honors as League Awards Announced
November 07, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Mimi Asom was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year and Sean Driscoll was named the Ivy League Coach of the Year as the 2018 All-Ivy League honors were announced.
Princeton won the Ivy League title and a bid to the NCAA tournament this year, each for the third time in four years, standing at 11-3-2 entering the postseason after having won four in a row to turn a 1-1-1 Ivy start into a 5-1-1 title-winning finish.
Asom, a senior forward, and Lucy Rickerson, a sophomore defender, were Princeton's first-team All-Ivy honorees.Â
Asom is the 12th player in Ivy League history to have earned both an Ivy League Rookie of the Year and Ivy Player of the Year honor, and she is the third Tiger to do so, joining Emily Behncke '06 and Diana Matheson '08. It's also the 12th time a Princeton player has won an Ivy Player of the Year award, and the program has taken such an award in 10 of the last 18 years. Asom succeeds former teammate Vanessa Gregoire '18 as Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year, and Princeton has won an OPOY honor in four of the six years since it was split into Offensive and Defensive honors.
Asom stands third on the Princeton career list with 43 goals and 95 points, and with 12 goals this year, she's the second player in Princeton history with at least three 10-goal seasons, joining former teammate Tyler Lussi '17. Asom's 12 goals this year made her the only Ivy Leaguer with double-figure goals, and her 25 points were also a league-best total. It's her fourth All-Ivy League honor and second first-team All-Ivy honor.
Driscoll has won the Ivy Coach of the Year honor in three of his four years at Princeton and has three of the five all-time Ivy Coach of the Year awards since the honor was inaugurated in 2014. He'll take a 51-14-7 record at Princeton into Friday's NCAA opener at Texas Tech.
Rickerson was an honorable mention All-Ivy as a freshman last year and has started 31 games over her two seasons.
Junior forward Courtney O'Brien, sophomore defender Eve Hewins and junior goalkeeper Natalie Grossi were second-team All-Ivy honorees. Grossi recorded 10 shutouts during the regular season to reset the Princeton record for shutouts at 25. It's the first All-Ivy honoree for Hewins and the second for Grossi and O'Brien. Grossi was an honorable mention All-Ivy last year and O'Brien was an All-Ivy first-teamer last year.
Freshman midfielder Emma Davis, junior midfielder Tomi Kennedy and junior defender Olivia Sheppard were all honorable mention All-Ivy. It's the first All-Ivy honor for each.
