Cannady Scores 23, But Saint Joseph's Beats Princeton
December 05, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Saint Joseph's used an early second-half surge to pull away from the Princeton men's basketball team Wednesday night in Jadwin Gym and head back to Philadelphia with a 92-82 win.
"I feel confident with what we're doing. We've just got to guard," Mitch Henderson, the Franklin C. Cappon-Edward G. Green '40 head coach of Princeton basketball said. "I believe we can be very good. We've got a lot of nice pieces. We're hopeful to welcome Jaelin (Llewellyn) back soon. He's working hard to get back to where we want him to be, but I feel really good about where we can be. We started off the season, Jose hadn't played any significant minutes (and now he has had) two straight games with production. Richmond is getting production. We know what Devin and Myles can do. I have confidence. We just haven't put it together yet, but it's coming."
The Hawks' largest first-half lead was eight points at 29-21 with seven minutes before the break, but the Tigers rallied to tie twice, last at 34-34 less than four minutes later. Saint Joseph's entered the second half with a three-point lead at 39-36, but a 17-5 run that began less than three minutes into the half broke open what was a three-point game and helped the Hawks get their largest lead of 16 points at 63-47 still with more than 12 minutes to play.
After the Hawks had that 16-point lead, Princeton made one final run, getting as close as six points on a Jerome Desrosiers 3-pointer with six minutes to go, but the Tigers couldn't close the gap.Â
The game was Princeton's last in Jadwin Gym for a month, with another Big Five team, Penn, set to play on Carril Court next on Jan. 5 as the Tigers open the Ivy season. Princeton will head on the road for their next five games, beginning Sunday at 1 p.m. for the MSG Holiday Festival. There, Princeton will play in the second half of a doubleheader, facing Iona. It'll be Princeton's first trip to Madison Square Garden since 2000.
