Maggie O'Connell, Devon Peterkin Earn All-Region Honors; O'Connell Adds Academic All-District Award
December 05, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Juniors Maggie O'Connell and Devon Peterkin, both of whom were named to the 2018 All-Ivy League first team, earned more postseason honors when they were earned 2018 All-Northeast Region honorable mention. This is the second all-region award for O'Connell, who also earned Academic All-District honors as well. It is the first all-region award for Peterkin.
O'Connell, the 2017 Ivy League Player of the Year and all-region honoree, posted the highest hitting percentage in league play (.432), and she ranked third in the league in kills per set (3.60). She was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after a 21-kill effort in Princeton's 3-1 home win over Yale early in the season. She ended the year with 271 total kills and a .359 attack percentage, as well as 48 blocks; she had 14 matches with double-digit kills, including three matches with at least 20 kills. Two of those matches were against Yale, including a nationally televised 22-kill performance in New Haven.
Peterkin, a three-time Ivy League Player of the Week this season, became Princeton's top outside hitter this year and recorded 254 kills and 243 digs on the season. She had 17 matches with double-digit kills, and 11 with double-digit digs; one of her most complete performances was a 16-kill, 20-dig effort in a 3-2 win at Maryland, the second Big 10 team Princeton defeated on the season. Peterkin ranked 10th in the league in kills and 11th in digs to become one of the league's most versatile players.
The Northeast Region features some of the top powers in the Big 10, including the likes of Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Purdue.
The duo helped Princeton to a 19-6 overall record and a 12-2 mark in Ivy League play. Though the Tigers were one match behind Yale for the Ivy title, they nearly made league history this postseason; no Ivy team has ever earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, but the committee chairperson announced that Princeton was one of the final four out when the 2018 postseason field was named.

Disappointed to not make NCAAs, but this note should say plenty about the season we had and the national respect we earned. No @IvyLeague team has ever earned a ?? at-large bid before. pic.twitter.com/suo0X6Epz1
