No. 19 Arizona State Captures 4-0 win at Princeton
December 07, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Backstopped by a 45-save performance by Joey Daccord, No. 19 Arizona State skated to a 4-0 win over Princeton on Friday night in Game 1 of a two-game set at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Sun Devils scored on their first shift with Johnny Walker netting his 13th goal of the season. Brett Gruber tacked on a late first-period goal to give the team a 2-0 lead after the first 20.
"We were soft in the first period, even in the first shift with the bad coverage," Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty said. "That's inexcusable. We have to be ready from puck drop. And if you're not scoring goals, you have to take care of the defensive zone and not give up goals and make it as difficult for the opposition to score."
Princeton outshot ASU 21-8 in the second period but came up empty.
Brinson Pasichnuk made it 3-0 less than two minutes into the third with a fluky goal that took an odd bounce off the ice and over the stick of sophomore Ryan Ferland in goal.
The Tigers outchanced the Sun Devils in the third but Daccord help strong in goal. With 30 seconds remaining on a power-play opportunity with eight minutes left in regulation, Princeton put the extra skater on and tried to get one by Daccord but an empty-net goal two minutes later Anthony Croston put the game out of reach.
"It was a good second period but you're judged on wins and losses and that's another loss. We have to bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow. It's a mandatory win for us tomorrow."
Princeton and Arizona State face off in Game 2 tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
