Despite Win From Local State Champion, Princeton Falls 24-16 To #14 Virginia Tech
December 07, 2018 | Wrestling
Local product Marshall Keller provided a final highlight for both the Princeton squad and a Virginia crowd who watched him win three state championships, but his technical fall would not be enough to give the Princeton wrestling team a second upset in as many weeks. #14 Virginia Tech used a 6-4 edge in wins to claim a 24-16 home win in front of 1,782 fans at Cassell Coliseum over Princeton.
Keller joined the ranked Princeton trio of #1 Matthew Kolodzik, #5 Patrick Brucki and #14 Patrick Glory in the win column, but Virginia Tech got wins from five ranked wrestlers of its own, as well as an early overtime win from BC LaPrade to claim its first dual win of the season.
Kolodzik moved to 4-0 on the season with an 8-2 win in the opener, and freshman Quincy Monday tried to extend that advantage in a thriller at 197. He led 3-1 after an early takedown, but LaPrade got a takedown in the third and the only escape in overtime for the 5-4 win. That set up a trio of ranked Hokies, who swept the next three matches to grab a 14-3 lead.
The only match between two ranked wrestlers came at 197, and Brucki set the tone against the 17th-ranked Tom Sleigh with a takedown only seconds into the match. He added three more, including one in the final seconds, to clinch an 8-3 win and improve to 8-0 on the season.
Sophomore Kendall Elfstrum moved to heavyweight and battled the seventh-ranked Billy Miller hard in a 10-2 loss, and Glory followed up with a dominant 17-2 technical fall at 125. Glory was in control throughout, but he went on a run of back points late in the second period to grab the five team points.
Virginia Tech clinched the team win at 133, but that didn't impact Keller, the freshman standout from nearby Christiansburg, Va. Keller had Dom Latona on his back in the first period and never looked back, thrilling the crowd with a 20-3 technical fall.
Princeton will head to Charlottesville Saturday for a 4 pm showdown against Virginia.
