Princeton Wins Program's First ECAC Title, Defeating Dartmouth 4-1
February 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
Princeton had competed in every season but one since 2009 and was in its fourth event final. The Tigers beat Harvard and Brown to reach the final before completing the title with Sunday's 4-1 win in a field that included the eight Ivy League teams.
With the victory, Princeton improved to 6-0 on the season for the first time since 1975, a run that includes a win over No. 12 (ITA)/12 (USTA) Auburn last Sunday. A new ITA ranking will be out Wednesday, and Princeton received votes in the most recent USTA top 25, released last week.
Princeton opened the match with a strong showing in doubles play, giving up just two games on courts one and three to clinch. Gaby Pollner then started singles with a win at five, followed by Stephanie Schrage, who teamed with Nicole Kalhorn to win on the top doubles court, winning on court two to put Princeton on the brink of the win. Nicole Kalhorn then finished off a win at third, holding off a second-set comeback from her Dartmouth opponent Raquel Lyn to win that second frame 6-4 after Lyn had tied it at 4-4.
The Tigers will continue their homestand Saturday against Xavier at 1 p.m. and Sunday against Kentucky, which received votes in both the most recent USTA and ITA rankings, at noon.
