When the USTA and ITA national rankings came out this week, the Princeton women's tennis team saw something new for this season.
The 6-0 Tigers saw their own name, right next to No. 24 in the USTA poll and among the schools receiving votes in the ITA poll. They also saw the name of one of their opponents for the weekend, with Kentucky receiving votes in both.
Continuing their homestand, and coming off their first-ever ECAC Championship title that saw the team beat Brown, Harvard and Dartmouth, the Tigers will start with Xavier Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jadwin Gym before hosting Kentucky Sunday at noon. Admission is free.
Princeton played its first match against Xavier last season in Cincinnati, a 5-2 Tiger win. Princeton faced Kentucky on the same trip, with the Wildcats winning their third straight match in the series, 4-0, and defeating the Tigers for the second time in as many seasons along with a 7-0 Wildcat win in 2016. Princeton won the series' first meeting in 1981 before Kentucky won for the first time in 1985.
Five of the six Tigers who were in the singles lineup last year on the Xavier-Kentucky trip are back this year, with rookie Stephanie Schrage, now ranked 81st in the nation by the ITA, joining the six. Senior Katrine Steffensen is ranked 100th.
Xavier enters at 4-3 with wins in three straight matches, over Lipscomb, Miami (Ohio) and Butler, and the Musketeers will make an all-Ivy road swing out of it with a trip to Penn Sunday. While Xavier is in Philadelphia, the Tigers will be facing Kentucky, which is 4-2 and coming off a win over Baylor, which is receiving votes in the latest ITA poll. The Wildcats count Akvile Parazinskaite among the ITA singles rankings, at No. 66, and Mami Adachi and Emily Fanning as the No. 28 doubles team.
Kentucky will also make it an all-Ivy weekend, going to Columbia Saturday before coming to Princeton.
The Tigers will continue their homestand through the first weekend in March with a run of Big Ten opponents, with Rutgers coming in next Wednesday, Feb. 21, Indiana that Sunday, Feb. 25, and Maryland and Penn State the following weekend.
