Second-Seeded Tigers Eliminate Penn, Set Up Semifinal Rematch vs Third-Seeded Trinity

HOWE CUP CHAMPIONSHIPS BRACKET
The second-seeded Princeton women's squash team wasn't about to let the reigning Howe Cup finalist Penn Quakers make a dramatic run from a lower seed this weekend. The Tigers took care of business in the middle and bottom of the ladder to eliminate seventh-seeded Penn 6-3 and set up a rematch of a January thriller with third-seeded Trinity during the semifinal round of the 2018 national team championships.
If there were any questions about how Princeton would handle the pressure of being a high seed, they were answered almost immediately at the Murr Center in Boston. Junior Kate Feeley, who moved into the lineup following an injury to sophomore Morgan Steelman, followed up her 3-0 performance at the 2017 Howe Cup with a dominant 3-0 win at the #9 position.
Senior co-captain Kira Keating battled back from a tight loss in her opener at #6 and controlled the final three games against Julia Buchholz to move Princeton up 2-0.
Even Princeton's only loss in the opening shift showed the progress the Tigers have made this season. Freshman Grace Doyle was coming off an injury layoff during the first Penn match and dropped a 3-0 match to Penn veteran Marie Stephan; in the Howe Cup quarterfinal, she pushed Stephan through a hard five-game match before ultimately falling 3-2.
It wasn't long after Doyle dropped her match at #3 that sophomore Madison Soukup was finished at the #8 spot. She dropped only 15 points in her victory over Nicole Windreich to give Princeton the momentum back, and freshman Emme Leonard built on that in her Howe Cup debut. She won three closely contested games to post a 3-0 win over Lindsay Stanley at the #5 spot.
Penn stayed alive at the #2 spot, though it was another spot where Princeton showed improvement from the midseason match with Penn. Freshman Raneem El Torky fell in three games to Melissa Alves, but she battled in a very tight four-game match before falling to Alves. El Torky actually won more total points in the match (39-38), but Alves won a trio of two-point games to earn the win.
It wouldn't be enough for the Quakers, as junior Isabel Hirshberg made quick work of her match at #7 to clinch the quarterfinal win. Hirshberg, who trailed 2-0 in January before rallying for a 3-2 victory, didn't have nearly as much trouble Friday evening. Like Soukup, she dropped only 15 points in a 3-0 win over Clare Kearns.
Junior Samantha Chai followed up her terrific regular season with a 3-0 win over Haley Scott to give Princeton a sixth win. Penn's Reeham Sedky, the only player to defeat Princeton senior co-captain Olivia Fiechter this season, repeated that effort with a x-x win to close the match.
Princeton will now take on third-seeded Trinity at 2:30 pm on Courts 1-3 at Harvard. You can watch all three courts here. These two teams met in the premier match of the regular season, a 5-4 comeback win for the Tigers that was punctuated by a victory by Fiechter at the #1 spot.
