Second-Seeded Princeton Carries Championship Aspirations To 2018 Howe Cup In Boston
February 15, 2018 | Women's Squash
The second-seeded Princeton women's squash team will begin its quest for a CSA-best 18th Howe Cup championship Friday at 4 pm when the Tigers face the seventh-ranked Penn Quakers at the Murr Squash Center at Harvard. It will be a challenging road for the Tigers, who will likely need to defeat the only three teams that have played in the Howe Cup final over the last five seasons to claim the 2018 title.
Of course, Princeton has shown a readiness to face any challenge this season, so you get the sense the Tigers wouldn't want it any other way.
Princeton (13-1) will face the 2016 and 2017 CSA runner-up Penn Quakers (7-6) Friday at 4 pm, a match that is set to be streamed live on the CSA web site. You can see the full championship bracket here.
Princeton defeated Penn 6-3 in an exciting match on the Ringe Squash Courts earlier this season, marking the Tigers' first win at Penn since 2006. The highlight match of the quarterfinal will come at #1, where former CSA finalist Reeham Sedky of Penn will take on Princeton senior co-captain Olivia Fiechter, who was just named one of three Richey Cup finalists. Sedky is the only player to defeat Fiechter this season, a 3-1 win at Penn.
Should form hold through Saturday, the Tigers would face third-seeded Trinity in a rematch of arguably the most exciting match of the entire CSA regular season. Princeton trailed the Bantams, then ranked #2, by a 4-1 margin before the Tigers caught fire. Isabel Hirshberg and Kira Keating picked up wins at #7 and #8 to get Princeton back to 4-3, and Samantha Chai went the distance before picking up an 11-4 win in the fifth to even the team score.
That left it all up to Court 1, where Fiechter topped Raneem Sharaf 3-1 to claim the triller. Should the two teams meet Saturday, it would be a 2:30 match on Courts 1-2-3.
Harvard, the top seed, is the strong favorite heading into the weekend, as the Crimson will both host the meet and enter the weekend on a 50-match winning streak. Harvard has won the last three national titles, and it has won every match this season by an 8-1 or 9-0 score. The Howe Cup championship match is set for Sunday at 2:30 pm.
