The Ivy League season doesn't start until March 31 for the Princeton women's tennis team, but they'll get a taste of the Big Ten over the next two weekends.
Beginning Wednesday with a visit from Rutgers, the Tigers will host two Big Ten teams this week along with Indiana Sunday. The Tigers are ranked 25th by the both the ITA and the USTA this week. In the ITA singles and doubles rankings released Tuesday, rookie Stephanie Schrage represented the Tigers, ranking 108th in singles.
Princeton entered last weekend's matches at 7-0 and swept Xavier, but the Tigers fell 4-3 Sunday to Kentucky, which received votes in both polls last week, in a contest that came down to the third set of the last singles match on court.
The Tigers will host Rutgers Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Indiana Sunday at 11 a.m. in Jadwin Gym, and admission is free. Rutgers is Princeton's most-played non-conference opponent, and the Tigers lead the series 38-2 having won 21 straight since the Scarlet Knights' last series win in 1996. The teams have played annually since 1981 after first meeting in 1975.
Princeton is 10-6 all-time against Maryland, but the only match in the last four years was last year in College Park where the Terps won 5-2.
The Scarlet Knights enter the match at 4-2 and looking to snap a two-match skid. The match is the second of three in a row against Ivies for Rutgers, which fell to Cornell 5-2 over the weekend and will travel to Yale Saturday. Indiana is 9-2, opening the season with eight straight wins against regional opponents including a Xavier team that Princeton defeated last weekend. The Hoosiers then 4-3 took losses to current No. 18 Tennessee and Notre Dame before a win over Wright State. Indiana will make it a two-Ivy trip, visiting Cornell Friday.
Princeton will continue the Big Ten run next weekend with Maryland Friday and Penn State Saturday.
