For the fifth consecutive year, the Princeton men's tennis team will be competing in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic this weekend in Montgomery, Ala.
The Tigers will open play Friday against Arizona at 9 a.m. local time in Montgomery, 10 a.m. Eastern. Doubles matches against either Rice or Alabama will follow later Friday, with singles play against that same opponent at a time to be determined Saturday, followed by a full match against one of Arizona State, Boise State, Auburn or Fresno State later Saturday to close the event.
Princeton has faced Arizona only once, back in 1985 in a Wildcat win in Irvine, Calif. Princeton's last win over a Pac-12 team at the time of the match was in 1991, against Washington in Los Angeles. Coming into Friday's match, Arizona stands at 8-4 after back-to-back wins against Northern Arizona and Nebraska.
Princeton's best finish at the event came in 2015, when the Tigers won their first two matches before dropping the final against South Florida. This year, Princeton stands 6-4 after a third-place finish at the ECAC Championship that included wins over Yale and Cornell around a loss to eventual champion Dartmouth.
In the latest ITA rankings, Arizona State stands 20th in the nation with Alabama 33rd. The Crimson Tide are receiving votes in the latest USTA top 25. Among individual rankings, Arizona State counts No. 56 Benjamin Hannestad and No. 65 Michael Geerts, Alabama has No. 113 Mazen Osama, and Auburn has No. 123 Edward Nguyen. In doubles, Alabama has No. 34 Osama and Edson Ortiz and No. 40 Thibault Cancel and Alexey Nesterov.
