Princeton's Power Play Propels Tigers to Home Ice in the ECAC Playoffs
February 24, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Entering the weekend with the fifth best power-play unit in the nation, Princeton used its special team to top St. Lawrence 4-3 in the final game of the regular season with the game-winning goal coming on the man-advantage with 1:28 remaining in the game.
The victory gives Princeton (13-12-4, 10-10-2) the No. 7 seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs and the Tigers will host No. 10 seed Brown next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink in a best-of-three series. All games will be at 7 p.m.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first period with junior defender Josh Teves converting on Princeton's first power-play opportunity in his second game back from injury. Junior Ryan Kuffner joined sophomore Jackson Cressey in a battle for the puck along the back wall and after gaining control found Teves at the bottom of the left face-off circle for the one-timer at 9:53. Cressey net his own goal at 16:47 when he redirected a drive by senior defender Matt Nelson.
St. Lawrence (7-25-2, 3-18-1) scored the next three goals, including two in 29 seconds in the second period. Both were nearly identical give-and-go goals with Laidley and Garvey scoring at 3:09 and 3:38.
After Princeton had a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal in the first, St. Lawrence turned things around in the second with a 13-8 edge. The third period would swing back in Princeton's favor 15-6.
Just 11 seconds into the third however Ryan Lough gave the Saints their first lead as he scored a power-play goal from Nolan Gluchowkski and Michael Ederer.
The Tigers started to build chemistry and started to make goaltender Arthur Brey work.
Kuffner evened the game at 11:56 with his 24th marker of the season off of Max Veronneau's 30th assist of the season. After a face off win to the left of Brey, Kuffner rifled a shot that went off of Brey's body and out to the right side where Veronneau won the race for the puck and centered for Kuffner who went blocker side.
After Gluchowski picked up a penalty for goaltender interference after he ran Ryan Ferland at 17:07, it set up the perfect opportunity for the power play to come up big and it did just that.
Senior David Hallisey scored his 17th goal of the season and second game winner after his shot hit the post and bounced in.
Ferland finished his night with 19 saves while Brey had to stop 34 as Princeton had a 38-22 edge in shots on goal.
The Tigers were 2 for 4 on the power play, while the Saints went 1 for 2.
Princeton concludes the ECAC season with a 10-10-4 record, the first time it has finished .500 or better since the 2010-11 season.
