Princeton Takes Down No. 3 Clarkson 4-3
February 03, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
Freshman defender Reid Yochim scored the game-winning goal on the power-play at 14:33 of the third period to lift the Princeton men's hockey team to a 4-3 win over No. 3 Clarkson on Friday night before a standing-room only crowd at Hobey Baker Rink. The Golden Knights had a 3-2 lead after two periods before senior David Hallisey knotted the game at 3-3 at 12:57.
This is Princeton's first win over a top-five team since Jan. 28, 2017 when the Tigers defeated No. 4 Penn State 5-4 in overtime at the Wells Fargo Center.
Princeton earns four points on the weekend, following a 5-4 overtime win over St. Lawrence yesterday and has won its last four games. Six games remain in the regular season with the Tigers currently in a tie for sixth place in the standings with a 7-8-1 league record, while they are 10-10-3 overall.
Yochim played the point for the Tigers on the power-play for junior Josh Teves who was out tonight with an injury. Check out the game-winning goal:
Clarkson converted on its first power-play opportunity just 3:01 into the game but less than five minutes later junior Ryan Kuffner evened the game with his fourth goal of the weekend. Right after a lost face off in the offensive end, Max Véronneau worked the puck off of a Golden Knight and put the puck in the slot for Kuffner, who had a hat trick in yesterday's win over St. Lawrence, into the back of the net.
Senior Eric Robinson gave Princeton a 2-1 lead at 15:23 of the first when Joe Grabowski held the Princeton puck in at the point after Jake Kielly made a stop on Robinson and then gave it right back for the wrister through traffic.
The Golden Knights converted on their next power-play chance at 2:17 of the second and then added to the lead midway through with a goal by Kevin Charyszyn from Josh Dickson.
The Tigers continued to find scoring opportunities but hit a snag with four straight penalties midway through the second, including two 10-minute misconducts for unsportsmanlike conduct. After having a packed penalty box, Princeton recovered, killing them off in succession and then going on the power-play for the final 1:02 of the second period.
The third period power-play gave the Tigers momentum and they continued to throw pucks at Kielly. Finally the Tigers succeeding in breaking him with a backhanded goal by Hallisey with sophomore Jackson Cressey and Robinson assisting.
With 1:11 remaining Clarkson pulled Kielly or the extra attacker but a number of Tigers came up big, including Robinson with a monster block as Princeton claimed the win over Clarkson.
