Harvard Tops Princeton to Open Ivy Road Weekend
February 09, 2018 | Men's Basketball
A late first-half run gave Harvard a lead over the Princeton men's basketball team Friday night at Lavietes Pavilion, and the Crimson didn't let it slip in a 66-51 Tiger defeat.
Princeton led by four at 17-13 on a Devin Cannady 3-pointer with 10 minutes to go before halftime, but from there, the Crimson closed the half on a 22-3 run and limited Princeton's points to only three free throws the rest of the opening half.
Princeton pulled within eight points after the break at 47-39 on a Richmond Aririguzoh dunk just before the midpoint of the half, but the Crimson let Princeton no closer.
"We've got to bounce back, put this one behind us," senior Amir Bell said. "We had a lot of turnovers tonight, shots really didn't fall, but in the second half, Will (Gladson) and Richmond (Aririguzoh), they played really well. We showed some fight, so hopefully tomorrow just, come back. We need tomorrow's win, so we've got to come out and have a good game."
Princeton shot 34 percent from the field, breaking a 14-game streak in which the Tigers shot at least 40 percent. Just more than half of Princeton's tries came from distance, as a 7-for-25 (.280) night from 3-point range affected that shooting percentage. It was the seventh time all season that more than half of Princeton's field goal tries came from beyond the arc, and first since Jan. 12 vs. Columbia.
Despite shooting 29.4 percent from 3, Harvard shot 44.2 percent from the field overall, going 18 of 35 (.514) from inside the arc.
