Princeton Battles Mississippi Tough in 5-2 Defeat
February 09, 2018 | Men's Tennis
The Tigers won on courts six and three, with Payton Holden winning his match on six in straight sets and Damian Rodriguez taking his match on three in three. All of the top five courts went to third sets, with Mississippi taking four of the five with the exception of Rodriguez's. The singles play followed a strong showing from the Rebels in doubles, yielding just one game between the second and third courts to claim the evening's opening point.
"For the second match in a row, we played a poor doubles point," Princeton coach Billy Pate said. "However, we took a step forward in singles and played inspired tennis up and down the lineup. We had plenty of chances and just didn't get over the hump in some crucial moments. Midway through the match and down the stretch, it was anyone's match. Ole Miss is a very talented and seasoned group. They are a very strong team, but we are disappointed because this was a great opportunity. Nonetheless, we'll have many more like this and we'll be even more confident next time out. We'll get the doubles corrected and continue to grow as a team. Sunday presents a good opportunity for more good competition and a chance to improve."
The Tigers have a pair of matches Sunday at Army West Point, first against Buffalo at 3 p.m. and then against the host Black Knights at 7 p.m. Friday's match moved to Centercourt Athletic Club with Jadwin Gym hosting the women's ECAC Championship.
"I want to thank Centercourt for hosting us and making this a special night of college tennis," Pate said. "The crowd was fantastic and it was a wonderful atmosphere for our team and the fans."
