Ranked Opponent Among Teams on Princeton's Road Docket This Weekend
February 07, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Mississippi, Army West Point and Buffalo are on the docket this weekend for the Princeton men's tennis team as the 2-2 Tigers head into their third weekend of the dual-match season.
Friday's 6:30 p.m. match against Mississippi will take place at the Centercourt Athletic Club in Chatham, N.J. The 7-1 Rebels have already faced two Ivy League teams, losing 4-1 to Columbia to open the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Virginia before getting a 4-2 home win over Cornell last weekend. Mississippi will be making it a two-match trip, heading to Columbia Sunday for another match with the Lions.
Mississippi is ranked 21st in the latest USTA poll while receiving votes in the ITA rankings. The Rebels count two top-20 singles players, including 16th-ranked Tim Sandkaulen and 20th-ranked Gustav Hansson, and three doubles pairs, though two overlap including Sandlauken and Fabian Fallert at No. 15, Filip Kraljevic and Zvonimir Babic at No. 21, and Babic and Hansson at No. 60.
The Tigers have never faced Mississippi, but the team's last win over an SEC program came just two seasons ago against Auburn. Princeton has put up a 61-2 all-time record against the Black Knights, who were formerly alongside Princeton in the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Army West Point's wins came in 1945 and 2004, and the teams have played once since 2007, a 7-0 win in Jadwin in 2015. Princeton and Buffalo have met in each of the last six seasons, with Princeton winning each time for a 6-0 all-time record against the Bulls. Only one of the six wins was 7-0, in 2013, and Buffalo was within 4-3 in 2014 and 2015. Last year's match went to Princeton 6-1 with three of Princeton's singles winners back in Kial Kaiser, Luke Gamble and Payton Holden.
Sunday's pair of matches at Army West Point will be a 3 p.m. start against Buffalo and 7 p.m. against Army West Point.
Next weekend, the Tigers will head to Yale for the ECAC Championship, with Princeton playing next at home on each of the first two weekends of March.
