PRINCETON, N.J. – The 2017-18 regular season comes to an end this weekend as the Princeton Tigers welcome the Brown Bears and Yale Bulldogs to Jadwin Gym.
Â
The game vs. Brown (Feb. 2) will get underway at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed on the Ivy League Network and ESPN3. Prior to Saturday's game vs. Yale (5 p.m.), the team will honor the Class of 2018. With one win, Princeton can clinch the No. 1 seed in the Ivy League Tournament. With two wins, the Tigers can earn the outright Ivy League championship.
Â
Let's take one last look at the Dartmouth/Harvard weekend …
Â
Helping Hands – Princeton had 21 assists on 32 made baskets against Dartmouth last Friday, highlighted by nine helpers from Leslie Robinson. The senior captain just missed a triple double with 15 points, nine assists and eight rebounds against the Big Green. Against Harvard, Bella Alarie had a team-high five assists as the Tigers had 14 on 20 buckets. Robinson is third in the Ivy League with 4.2 assists per game while 130 helpers this season is tied for 10th on the all-time list for a single-season.
Â
Princeton's Offensive Efficiency – The Tigers were lights out against Dartmouth, going 32-of-55 (58.2 percent) from the floor. In fact, Princeton had, perhaps, its most efficient two quarters of the season against the Big Green in the second half, missing just two shots inside the three-point line (14-of-16). Four Tigers scored in double figures in the win.
Â
Kate Letkewicz – One week after being named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week, the Dartmouth senior was held to just 3-of-11 shooting and one three-pointer against Princeton. She scored nine points and finished the season with eight baskets against the Tigers in an inefficient 23 attempts.
Â
Dartmouth Three-Point Shooting – The Big Green had success in the first half from long distance, going 4-of-7 (57.1 percent), but made only two treys in the second half.
Â
Harvard Three-Point Shooting – In third quarter as the Crimson outscored the Tigers, 27-14, Harvard knocked down four of five three-pointers and finished the second half 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. Harvard completed the contest with 10 three-pointers with five different players sinking one.
Â
And now on to Brown and Yale …
Â
The Princeton Class of 2018 - The senior class enters the weekend with a record of 90 wins and 26 losses, including 45-9 in the Ivy League. They have won one Ivy League crown, have been to the postseason three times including the program's first ever victory in the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Abby Meyers – The freshman earned her second Ivy Rookie of the Week accolade with an impressive weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard, scoring 16.0 points per game on 55.6 percent shooting and 54.5 percent from the three-point line. She has double-digits in seven Ivy games this season after having just five in the non-conference portion of the schedule.
Â
Brown Scoring – The Bears features two of the best scorers in the conference in Shayna Mehta (18.2 pts, 2nd) and Justine Gaziano (17.9 pts, 3rd). Mehta registered 18 points in the first meeting against Princeton last month, but on 18 shots while Gaziano had eight on a 2-of-10 performance.
Â
Brown Defense – In the team's eight games in the month of February, Brown gave up 70 points six times, going 2-6 in that stretch. In the matchup vs. Princeton on Feb. 3, the Tigers were 19-of-35 (54.3 percent), outscoring the Bears, 45-30 between the second and third quarters. Princeton was never threatened in the final stanza.
Â
Turnovers – In its loss to Yale earlier this season, Princeton turned the ball over 24 times, leading to 23 Yale points. The Bulldogs won the game, 73-59. Yale tops the conference in turnover margin (+4.9), forcing turnovers (20.3), and steals per game (10.6). Tara Simpson's 4.7 steals per game is third in the country.
