DANCING TIME! Princeton Dominates Penn, 63-34, Earns Ivy Tournament Title, NCAA Bid
March 11, 2018 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA –  The Princeton Tigers are going dancing! Behind an overpowering defensive effort, the No. 1 seeded Tigers steamrolled the No. 2 seeded Penn Quakers, 63-34, in the Ivy League Tournament Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at the Palestra.
Â
Bella Alarie was honored as the Ivy League Tournament Most Outstanding Player as she just missed another double-double with eight points, 17 rebounds, securing six blocks as well. Her 17 rebounds matched her career best, a mark she set...yesterday. Her 277 rebounds are the fourth most in a single-season in program history while her 126 blocks this year are the fifth most. Leslie Robinson and Abby Meyers were also named to the All-Tournament team. Meyers' 18 points led all scorers in the game. It's the second straight year that Alarie and Robinson were named to the All-Tournament team.
Â
With the victory, Princeton will head to its seventh NCAA Tournament in the last nine years, all under head coach Courtney Banghart. The Tigers last went to the Big Dance in 2016, when they were the first Ivy League team to receive an at-large bid. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will be Monday (Mar. 11) at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
Â
Princeton's defense stole the show in the first quarter as it held Penn to one basket on 14 attempts in the first ten minutes. The Tigers scored the first seven points of the game and went on another 7-0 spurt after Penn finally scored at the 5:55 mark. The Tigers led 19-3 after the first quarter.
Â
Penn scored consecutive baskets, cutting its deficit to 14, 24-10, with six minutes to go. A free throw from Robinson and trey from Gabrielle Rush quickly pushed the Tigers' lead back to 18. The Quakers, again, got within 14, but the Tigers kept Penn at bay, taking a 35-16 lead into intermission. Meyers registered 15 of her 18 points in the first half while Princeton held Penn to 6-of-28 from the floor (21.4 percent)
Â
Once again, the Tigers' defense shined as they held the Quakers to just two baskets in the first eight minutes of the second half, expanding their lead to 29, 49-20. Penn would not get within 20 the rest of the way. Michelle Nwokedi finished with 13 points to lead the Quakers. She, along with Harvard's Katie Benzan were named to the All-Tournament Team with the three Princeton players.
Â
The Quakers' 12 baskets and 22.2 percent shooting are their lowest of the season. Penn scored a combined 10 points in the first and fourth quarters. The Tigers' bench scored 36 points in the win. Head coach Courtney Banghart's team outrebounded Penn 48-31.
